Come Be a Part Of It

A group of Kurds and their friends will be engaging in theatrical performances to give freedom a boost.

“Our goal is to highlight the plight of the Kurds,” said Kani Xulam, the director of the American Kurdish Information Network (AKIN).

The Kurds have the dubious distinction of being the largest stateless people in the world.

The organizers would like to put an end to that dismal status.

To that end, they will be targeting public buildings that get a lot of foot-traffic.

The first place on their list is the Islamic Center of Washington, DC. They will make an appeal to the faithful who are woefully ignorant of the deplorable situation of the Kurds in the Islamic world.

The Union Station is next destination of the protesters. There, they will do the same, but this time, target the folks who work for the legislative branch of the government.

Their third venue will be the Foggy Bottom metro station. It happens to be next to the State Department as well as the George Washington University.

The participants will blindfold themselves, stuff their ears, and duct tape their mouths and carry signs saying, “Thank God You Are Not a Kurd — I am in Turkey [or Iran or Syria]!”

The lead banners will read, “Stop Muslim on Muslim Oppression NOW!” and “Legalize Kurdistan in the Middle East!” The first standard will be on display in front of the DC mosque and the second will lead the protesters to the secular sites.

Students from local universities are helping distribute AKIN’s “Declaration of Conscience” at the protest sites.

They will also ask interested onlookers to sign up as volunteers to staff the ongoing protests.

The performances will continue so long as the weather smiles on us. The venues will change occasionally — please check our website, kurdistan.org, for the exact locations.

“We are hoping to stir the conscience of Americans to side with freedom and the Kurds,” said Kani Xulam.

If you are a Kurd or a friend of the Kurds and happen to live in DC area, please consider staffing our protests.

Kurds and their friends are encouraged to duplicate our efforts in their schools, towns and cities.

Remember, Kurdistan belongs to the Kurds and we should fight for it as if we are taking it back from the trespassers.
