It’s as if Charles Martin had the Turkish foreign minister in mind when he wrote in his novel, Chasing Fireflies: “He thinks the sun comes up just to hear him crow.”

But neither the cocksure bluster of his flamboyant platitudes—nor his unshakeable faith in Turkey’s wishful superpower rank—can fasten reality into his Ali Baba fantasies.

His favorite story: “When we took over, Turkey resembled a man with bulging muscles, empty stomach, a barely pumping heart and a brain that was no bigger than a bird’s.

“Now, our stomach is full, our heart is robust, our brain [miraculously puffed-up to genius capacity] is second to none, and our muscles are more impressive than before.”
