A
Vigil for Human Rights

A July 31 letter from the Turkish
embassy accuses Kani Xulam of holding his vigil at Sheridan Circle to defend
the terrorist organization known as PKK. But nowhere in his July 15 Close to
Home piece does Mr. Xulam defend the PKK.
The four parliamentarians whose
photographs line the vigil have been in prison for seven years for speaking
Kurdish, which is illegal in Turkey. The rulers of Turkey have demonstrated
their contempt for freedom.
The question is, where does the
United States stand on freedom and human rights? Will it be more helicopters
for Turkey or support for the human rights of the Kurds?
As for me, I'll be standing at the
vigil.
